Turmeric has often been said to be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence. Curcuma longa as it is biologically known, contains compounds called Curcuminoids, the most important of which is Curcumin . Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric, it has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.
Anti-inflammatory properties – Curcumin helps your body fight foreign invaders and has a role in repairing damage, by blocking NF-kB or a molecule that turns on genes related to inflammation. The Arthritis Foundation cites several studies in which turmeric has reduced inflammation.
Antioxidant – Increases the antioxidant capacity of the body- Curcumin in turmeric is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure, as well as potentially boost the activity of your body’s own antioxidant enzymes. The antioxidant effect of turmeric appears to reduce liver damage as a result of toxins.
Improve brain function & lower risk of brain diseases– Curcumin can increase brain levels of BDNF, a type of growth hormone that functions in your brain to aid neurons in forming new connections and multiplying. Increased levels of BDNF may be effective in delaying or even reversing many brain disease and age-related decreases in brain function, as well improve memory.
Pain relief- One study notes that turmeric seems to work as well as ibuprofen (Advil) in people with arthritis.
Lower risk of heart disease- Curcumin may help reverse many steps in the heart disease process, by improving the function of the endothelium or lining of blood vessels. Endothelial dysfunction is a major driver of heart disease for many factors. As stated before, Curcumin also reduces inflammation and oxidation, which play a role in heart disease as well.
Reduce risk of cancer- Curcumin has been found to affect cancer growth, development and spread at the molecular level. Studies also indicated that Curcumin may contribute to the death of cancerous cells, reduce angiogenesis, and metastasis.
Preventing and treating Alzheimer’s- Curcumin lowers inflammation and oxidative damage, both huge roles in Alzheimer’s disease. In additions, Curcumin can help clear buildup of protein tangles, called amyloid plaques, a key feature in Alzheimer’s disease.
Benefits against depression- in some studies, Curcumin has been effective as an antidepressant. Depression is linked to reduced levels of BDNF and a shrinking hippocampus, which Curcumin boosts. There is also some evidence that Curcumin can boost the brain neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine.
The name turmeric derives from the Latin word terra merita (meritorious earth), referring to the color of ground turmeric, which resembles a mineral pigment. It is known as terre merite in French. Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow color. It helps to consume black pepper with it, which contains piperine, a natural substance that enhances the absorption of Curcumin by 2,000%.
